About

Background

Syrinx Concerts Toronto was established in 1986 as a charitable foundation whose aim was to produce and present concerts throughout Canada. Among its objectives was the promotion of Canadian artists and composers.

From 1986-1993, Syrinx Concerts presented an annual series of chamber concerts, first at the YMCA and then at the St. Lawrence Centre for the Performing Arts. These featured many fine Canadian musicians, often with the support of actors and commentators. The Foundation also participated in the commission of new works including three song cycles by noted Canadian composer Srul Irving Glick.

Syrinx Concerts Toronto has been supported by the Ontario Arts Council, the Toronto Arts Council, the Department of Cultural Affairs of Metropolitan Toronto, the Department of Canadian Heritage in Ottawa, the Laidlaw Foundation, and many private and corporate donors. Further, both CBC and CJRT have recorded a number of its concerts.

In order to continue the mandate first established by the Chrylark Music Series, Syrinx Sunday Salons was formed in the summer of 2005. Our Series’ agenda is to support Canadian musicians and promote Canadian classical composers. In 2002-03, under the Chrylark Series flag, we featured the Canadian composer Srul Irving Glick. The following years we presented Walter Buczynski and Oskar Morawetz. In the 2005-06 season, Syrinx focused on the chamber works of Steven Gellman, and in 2006-07 we presented the music of Jean Coulthard.

Each year, we present both established and flourishing young performers during a five concert series. This year we have added a special Thursday night concert in January 2008 with the Duke Trio in addition to our regular season. Each Sunday concert presents a different chamber work by the featured composer, integrating their work within a larger program of more familiar repertoire. In 2007-08 our series will offer the chamber music of Anton Kuerti. Under the umbrella of Syrinx Concerts Toronto, Syrinx Sunday Salons continues to promote Canadian classical music and provide opportunities for Canadian artists.

Audiences have also greatly enjoyed performances from both established Canadian musicians and promising young artists such as the Veritas Piano Quartet, (Glenn Gould School), Vladimir Orloff, Alexander Tselyakov, Valerie Siren, Daedulus Trio (Glenn Gould School), Peter Longworth, Alissa Lee, Jeanie Chung, the Duke Trio, Trio Norté, Coenraad Bloemendal, Valerie Tryon, Musica Camerata, Susan Hoeppner, Daniel Bolshoy, and the Cerberus Ensemble, featuring Hiroko Kagawa, David Visentin, Paul Widner, Cherry Kim, and Benjamin Bowman.
